Welcome to Spring and Documentary Work

Mudroom Lineup, ...these are not Ozzie and Harriet's children

Throughout the term we'll be looking at different documentary practices and varied methods of working, helping you build a repertoire of approaches and expectations for your own documentary work now and in the future.

At the same time, we'll look at the history of documentary work, discuss the ways that culture and documentary practices have evolved and why they have taken the forms they have. We'll examine the ethics of such practices and learn how documentary work has had an impact on society.

But this is a shooting class, too. Each of you will develop a documentary project that puts what you're learning into practice. Classes turn into a collaborative dialogue as you photograph, gather information, put yourself into someone else's world, study and read. Out of this kind of engagement a deeper, more meaningful look at your subject will emerge, as well as some forms for your work that will bring your subject to life for someone who was not there....
